What I’m Doing Right Now
(inspired by Derek Sivers)

Directing
I just completed the Cabaret Year 5 cast change, which was a full cast change of leads, ensemble and understudies. I’m really proud of the work. I am continuing to maintain Cabaret, and I am beginning to plan for the next cast change, which begins on January 5th 2026. We are only changing two leads, so it will be a smaller project.
Writing
I completed a draft of my latest TV spec, The Family Gut, at the beginning of October. This one took quite a while, but I like it a lot. I am going to do a re-draft and polish this month before sending it to the BBC Opencall. I am also picking at several different new ideas to see which one suddenly grows legs and runs into the lead of the ‘My next project’ marathon.
Filmmaking
I am teaching myself how to make DIY films, with my phone and a gimbal I bought inexpensively from eBay. I’m undertaking a series of technical exercises disguised as short films. I want to learn how it works without the pressure of expressing myself. I want to get to a place where I don’t have to ask for permission to make something.
Other stuff
My friend Sean and I are doing a project where we listen to one album a day from the KEXP Listeners’ Favourite Albums of All Time list and send each other a text about it. We have only mentioned how long it’d take to complete as a joke. My favourites so far are Let Love In by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, New York by Lou Reed, Raw Power by The Stooges and Ferment by Catherine Wheel.
I went to see Turnstile at Alexandra Palace and they were phenomenal. I am also going to see The Weather Station & Cameron Winter before the year is done.
Jonah started school at Coleridge in September. It’s been a big change for him and he’s doing brilliantly. I like the structure of the school day and the school year giving a framework to life once again.
Our kitchen is being renovated. They started late and it’s taking longer than expected, so we’ve been living out of boxes for what seems like forever.
I loved One Battle After Another (seen on Vistavision for the cinephiles). I saw Richard Linklater talk at the BFI and he was amusingly grumpy. I really liked Good One on MUBI. I really liked Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue on BBC. I’m currently watching season 4 of The Bear and season 3 of Blue Lights. We do a movie and pizza night here every Saturday, where we have recently watched all 3 Cinderella movies (who knew there were 3 Cinderella movies!) - Cinderella 3 is underrated.
